Manor Operatic Society Making Pantomime Accessible to Even More People

12 Nov 2015

Manor Operatic Society will present a captioned performance of their 2015/16 pantomime, Cinderella, at Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 30th December at 6.15pm. The performance will give the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing an opportunity to enjoy a vivid, spectacular production of a pantomime classic.

Drop-down captioning screens will allow a section of seats in the auditorium to follow the text script along with the performance. Acting much like TV subtitles, these screens will display lines as they are spoken on stage.

This week sees Captioning Awareness Week, run by Stagetext between Monday 9th and Sunday 15th November, tackling the issue of better accessibility to the arts for the hearing impaired, trending on social media and raising awareness of captioned performances.

Anyone who has been to one of Manor Operatic Society’s famous City Hall pantomimes before will know what to expect in Cinderella; rousing sing-alongs, spectacular dance routines and hilarious slapstick comedy, along with a unique brand of audience participation. Children will be invited onstage for the ‘bucket game’, an anarchic take on musical chairs, and dough will fly across the auditorium in the now legendary baking scene!

The annual Manor Operatic Society pantomime is an irreplaceable part of Sheffield’s entertainment calendar. The company have over 60 years of experience producing affordable family entertainment, providing aspiring local youngsters with a path into the performing arts.

They most recently took to the Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall stage with their 2015 summer show, a production of ‘Ghost – The Musical’ complete with vast video walls that pushed the envelope for local theatre, drawing acclaim from the show’s Broadway production.

With this captioned performance, even more people will have the opportunity to enjoy what is sure to be a whirlwind of music, dance, comedy, vibrant scenery and exquisite costumes, a treat for the whole family!
